Russian President Vladimir Putin has put Russia’s nuclear forces on excessive alert, and there are lots of analysts who say Russia may use tactical nuclear weapons. It’s threats like this, in addition to Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, that remind us why militaries matter. In this episode of China Unscripted, we discuss how Americans view the US navy, what implications this has for geopolitics, and the way Putin has (hopefully) been a wakeup name for the West on the significance of a robust navy as deterrence. Joining us on this episode is retired US Navy Commander Paul Giarra. He managed the US-Japan alliance for the workplace of the Secretary of Defense, and helped create the worldwide technique for the US Navy on the finish of the Cold War.

This is a spotlight from the complete episode No. 156 The US Navy Needs a Strategy If it’s Going to Beat China | Paul Giarra
