RICHMOND, Virginia (WRIC) – Chief Justice Donald W. Lemons will retire from the Virginia Supreme Court on February 1.

Days after he introduced his resignation as Chief Justice, Lemons notified Governor Ralph Northam, Governor-elect Glenn Youngkin and different heads of state of his intentions to withdraw from the courtroom.

“It has been an honor and privilege to serve the judiciary and residents of the Commonwealth of Virginia for greater than 25 years,” Lemons wrote in a December twenty second letter.

Goodwyn elected chairman of the Virginia Supreme Court

On Monday the Supreme Court introduced that S. Bernard Goodwyn had been elected by his colleagues as the brand new Chief Justice.

Lemons will step down as chief decide on December 31, a month earlier than he plans to retire.

The 1998 General Assembly elected Lemons to the Court of Appeals of Virginia and a decide on the Virginia Supreme Court in 2000.
